I’m one of those people who doesn’t like plain water. Sparkling water though? Absolutely! The downside is that it usually comes in plastic bottles so getting a Sodastream machine was a great switch. I still get my bubble fix, without the plastic waste. It’s a great product. It’s also on the BDS list and that is a big deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in 2024, I wrote a blog post about ethical Sodastream alternatives. Shortly after that, my blog crashed. Coincidence? I guess I’ll never know but I think it’s time to bring the article back, with updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement is a Palestinian-led campaign that urges economic and cultural pressure on Israel to end the violations of Palestinian rights and the occupation of Palestine. SodaStream became a BDS target because the main factory was located in the largest illegal settlement in the occupied West-Bank. They were basically benefiting from stolen land and resources, which also happened to strengthen the colony. Sodastream’s counterargument was that they were employing both Israeli and Palestinians but it was later revealed that the Palestinians were exploited and mistreated. Eventually, the factory was relocated, Pepsi bought Sodastream, but the discrimination against Palestinian continued. We don’t support that around here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Great product, shitty company<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My Sodastream machine is a hand-me-down and I’m not getting rid of it. Neither should you if you have one. And if you are looking to buy a sodamaker, look at thrift stores and second-hand platforms first. They’re packed with Sodastreams because people buy them to make Pepsi and get rid of them when they realize the brand-syrups taste awful. The next option is to buy from the brands listed below. As long as the money doesn’t to Sodastream, we’re happy. But here is where it gets tricky. All sodamakers run on CO2 cartridges that need to be replaced regularly. There is even a deposit system and they get refilled but the problem is that most cartridges are from SodaStream or Wassermax, which is a company they own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ethical Sodastream alternatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I wasn’t sure about the best way to present this list because all these companies ship to different places but I figured I could try to present it in a table. Also, there are definitely other options out there but you would most likely find them at retail stores. At work we have this tap that looks like a beer tap but dispenses sparkling water and I have no idea where it’s from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of these brand also offer syrups, extra bottles and other accessories. But like I was saying, the tricky part is the CO2 cartridges. Luckily, most soda makers use the same standard screw in connection and cartridges size, so it won’t really matter which brand of CO2 you buy. For refills, the simplest option is to exchange them at a store or an exchange point and many hardware and cookware stores carry the brands I listed in the table. Some online retailers offer mail-in exchange with pre-approved return packaging. I find both options a bit annoying because the canisters are so small anyway. I ended up buying a 2kg canister and started refilling the canisters myself. You can even skip the small canisters altogether and directly connect a larger tank directly to the soda maker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
