Sustainable Swimwear: My Favorite Brands for Summer

My vacation has officially started, and I couldn’t be more excited! Even though we’ve decided to spend our summer here in Norway this year, don’t think for a second that I won’t be needing my bikinis. Living by the sea means endless opportunities for refreshing dips. Besides, Norway is blessed with countless lakes so there’s no shortage of beautiful swimming spots. But before we dive into my favorite sustainable swimwear brands, let me be crystal clear about something: you don’t need to buy a new swimsuit every year. Your bikini from last year is absolutely fine. In fact, using what you already own is the most sustainable choice you can make. If your swimsuit is still in good condition, rock it with confidence and skip this entire shopping conversation.

Now that we’ve got that important reminder out of the way, if you genuinely need a new swimsuit because your old one has seen better days, then read on.

The Problem with Conventional Swimwear

Most conventional swimwear brands rely on virgin nylon and polyester materials that contribute significantly to environmental damage. These synthetic fabrics are derived from petroleum, require intensive manufacturing processes, and can take hundreds of years to decompose. When these suits inevitably wear out, they end up in landfills where they’ll outlast us all. Additionally, every wash releases microplastics into our water systems, eventually finding their way into our oceans and food chain.

Sustainable swimwear brands take a completely different approach. They prioritize recycled materials like ECONYL, a fabric made from discarded fishing nets, carpet waste, and other nylon waste that would otherwise pollute our oceans. These brands also implement ethical manufacturing practices, use eco-friendly dyes and design sturdy pieces built to last multiple seasons.

My Top 6 European Sustainable Swimwear Brands:

Masara – Known for their sophisticated designs using recycled materials and commitment to ethical production, creating pieces that transition beautifully from beach to city.

Batoko (UK) – This brand focuses on creating swimwear from ECONYL regenerated nylon, turning ocean waste into stunning, performance-ready pieces with bold, artistic prints.

Eona (PT) – Specializes in sustainable swimwear using eco-friendly materials and processes, with a focus on flattering cuts that celebrate diverse body types.

Scampi (SE) – Creates timeless swimwear pieces from recycled ocean plastic, emphasizing durability and classic design that won’t date.

Borneo (FR) – A brand committed to ocean conservation, using recycled materials to create swimwear while supporting marine protection initiatives.

Junk LDN (UK) – This London-based brand transforms waste into wearable art, creating unique swimwear pieces from recycled materials with an edgy, urban aesthetic.

Essentials for Zula (AT) – Focuses on minimalist, sustainable swimwear made from eco-conscious materials, perfect for the understated luxury lover.

Nila (NL) – Creates elegant swimwear using sustainable practices and materials, with attention to both environmental impact and timeless style.

BCBY (PT) – Known for their innovative approach to sustainable swimwear, using recycled ocean plastic and focusing on performance and comfort.

There are many more incredible sustainable swimwear options across Europe and beyond and some of the clothing brand I listed in my brand directory offer some models. The key is to look for that magic word: ECONYL.

What About Plastic-Free Swimwear?

While recycled materials are a massive improvement over virgin synthetics, recent studies have shown that recycled fibers tend to shed twice the amount of microplastics compared to virgin synthetic fabrics. As a result, some brands are pushing even further by exploring low plastic or plastic-free alternatives:

Pure Earth (UK) – Creates swimwear from natural rubber and organic cotton, offering a biodegradable option that breaks down naturally at end of life.

Natasha Tonic (US) – Experiments with innovative plant-based materials and natural fibers like cotton and hemp in their sustainable collections.

Isole & Vulcani (IT) – Creates pieces using cotton and elastane sourced with minimal environmental impact. These brands represent the cutting edge of truly circular swimwear design, though they’re often more niche and may require different care considerations than their synthetic counterparts.

Movesgood (SE) – Makes revolutionary sun and swimwear in GOTS certified bamboo lyocell that is kind to you body and out planet.

Taking Care of Your Investment

Once you’ve invested in quality sustainable swimwear, proper care is essential to maximize its lifespan. Always rinse your suit in cold fresh water immediately after swimming to remove chlorine, salt, and sunscreen. Hand wash with gentle detergent, avoid wringing or twisting the fabric, and never put swimwear in the dryer. Instead, lay flat in shade to air dry. With proper care, a well-made sustainable swimsuit can last for years, making it both an environmentally conscious and economically smart choice.

Remember, the most sustainable swimsuit is the one you already own, but when it’s time for a replacement, choosing brands that prioritize our planet’s health makes all the difference for future swimming seasons.
